Astrologer and Choreographer Rinhee Suberwal has opened up about a deeply personal tribute to her grandmother, the late Manjula Das Gupta, fondly remembered as “Chhattisgarh ki Lata.” The Cultural Spine penned by writer and social worker Anjani Saraf has been dedicated to her nani, celebrating her extraordinary contribution to Indian culture and society. Rinhee shares that the book is especially close to her heart as it was released around the time of her grandmother’s passing. “My nani was strongly associated with the culture of India. She travelled across the country with her shows and performances, singing countless folk songs that touched hearts everywhere. This book is a way to keep her legacy alive,” she says. Manjula Das Gupta was not only a celebrated cultural figure but also a compassionate human being. Known for her powerful voice and affection, she was honored with the title “Chhattisgarh ki Lata” by the Governor and Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. Her influence extended far beyond the stage—she was deeply involved in helping the poor, making donations, supporting stray animals, helping people secure jobs, and motivating women to step into the workforce. “She was an inspiration to so many people, and her personality was full of love and warmth. Everyone who knew her was deeply connected to her, and her passing has affected us all greatly,” Rinhee adds. The book, written by Anjani Saraf—who runs an NGO and is also active in politics—focuses on cultural strength and unity while chronicling Manjula Das Gupta’s life, achievements, and her deep-rooted values. Saraf’s association with the family and admiration for Manjula’s work made her the ideal voice to pen this tribute. Rinhee recalls that her nani’s influence not only brought them closer to Indian culture but also paved the family’s path into the film industry and Mumbai. “Because of nani, we built strong connections. Even great leaders like Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Rajiv Gandhi had witnessed her talent. She was often invited to perform the patriotic song ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon,’ which left audiences emotional every single time.” Through this heartfelt tribute, Rinhee hopes that more people come to know her nani’s story and take inspiration from her journey. “She gave so much to everyone around her—love, guidance, and encouragement. I want her to always be remembered as a source of inspiration for future generations,” she says with pride.
