1] Thalapathi (1991)

Thalapathi is undoubtedly one of the best gangster crime dramas ever made in Indian Cinema. The film had a dream cast of Rajanikanth, Mammootty and Arvind Swamy. The plot of Thalapathi is based on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana, characters from the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. The film marked the Tamil debut of Amrish Puri. 2] Roja (1992)

Roja is one of the most iconic romantic thriller films set in the backdrop of terrorism. The film is high on patriotism and emotions. The film had a superb music album. This film marked the debut of A.R. Rahman. The film stars Arvind Swamy, Madhoo and Pankaj Kapur. Roja was one of the solid and memorable classics made by Genius Mani Ratnam.

3] Bombay (1995)

Bombay was one of the most important film of it’s time and still holds the same relevance in today’s time. The trio of Mani Ratnam, Arvind Swamy and A. R. Rahman delivered another classic. This is Mani Ratnam’s 2nd best film. The film gave a solid message about unity. The film was a fictional depiction of Hindu-Muslim 1993 riots. The film gave a message about peace and communal harmony. The climax was really hard hitting. Bombay was a much needed film of the hour at the time of its release. The film had a chartbuster music album. This has to be Mani Ratnam’s greatest social message based film till date.

4] Iruvar (1997)

Iruvar is one of the finest political dramas ever made in Indian Cinema. Iruvar was the debut film of Mohanlal in Tamil Cinema. Iruvar was known for the performances of Mohanlal and Prakash Raj. The film also had Revathy, Tabu and Aishwarya Rai in pivotal roles. Mani Ratnam’s direction was top notch.

5] Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)

After the success of romantic drama Alai Payuthey, Madhavan and Legend Mani Ratnam collaborated for this hard-hitting classic Kannathil Muthamittal. Mani Ratnam made a sensitive and emotional film set in the war conflict. Mani Ratnam merged 2 to 3 stories and made a Classic. This is Madhavan’s one of the finest performances.
