The Cholas are back with a bang. Ponniyin Selvan 2 comprises everything of beauty, grandeur, drama, suspense and action. Mani Ratnam for whom this has been like a dream project has designed the film on a grand scale with spectacular visuals and larger than life sets. Mani Ratnam has given a royal treatment to the film and it can be seen in the trailer. The film is high on action and costume design is top notch.
In the trailer we can see that the news of Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) aka Ponniyin Selvan’s death is circulating. Aditha Karikalan (Chiyaan Vikram) is seen performing who has been offered tu rule half of the Chola Kingdom is seen performing action sequences. We come to know further in the trailer that Ponniyin Selvan is alive as he tells Kundavai (Trisha) about Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) saving his life. Nandini is planning to avenge her father’s death by destroying the Cholas. At the end Nandini who plays the love interest of Aditha, holds a sword in front of him.
Mani Ratnam has delivered many classics like Mouna Ragam (1986), Nayakan (1987), Gitanjali (1989), Anjali (1990), Thalapathi (1991), Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Iruvar (1997) and Kannathil Muthamittal (2002). We hope that Mani Ratnam delivers his best with PS-2.
Ponniyin Selvan 1 was based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel Ponniyin Selvan (1955). Set in the 10th century, PS-1 explores the history of the Chola Dynasty, who ruled prosperously across South India then. Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) has set up his kingdom and his sons, Aditha Karikalan (Chiyaan Vikram) and Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi), who have conquered Kanchi and Sri Lanka, respectively. A group of devoted Pandya soldiers plots to avenge the death of their king Veerapandyan (Nassar), on the battlefield by Ajitha. Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is the queen of Pazhuvoor, who was once Aditha’s lover and now wants to take revenge, while Sundara’s daughter Kundavai (Trisha) is dedicated to save the kingdom.
It was originally intended to be a single film but was split into two parts.
PS-1 emerged as the highest grossing Tamil Film of 2022. It is the 2nd highest grossing Tamil film of all time. It collected more than 500 cr gross at the worldwide Box Office.
The trailer launch event of PS-2 happened on a grand scale. The event was attended by many prominent names of Tamil Film Industry.
After the humongous success of PS-1 expectations are high from the 2nd part. Hope Mani Ratnam delivers what he is best known for.
The film stars Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, and Jayam Ravi in the lead roles. It also stars Ashwin Kakumanu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Lal, and Mohan Raman.
Ponniyin Selvan 2 is directed by Mani Ratnam. Music is composed by AR Rahman. The film is produced by Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran. The film is written by Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Kumaravel. Ponniyin Selvan 2 is all set to release on 28th April, 2023.
