Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani collaborated for the 2nd time after the Blockbuster film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 had the advantage of being a sequel and did wonders at the Box Office, but who will save this Katha from being unsuccessful at the Box Office. Satyaprem Ki Katha is directed by Sameer Vidwans who has directed a Classic Biopic of Anandi Gopal in Marathi Cinema. After watching the film, I felt like both the films (Satyaprem Ki Katha & Anandi Gopal) are directed by 2 different individuals. Satyaprem Ki Katha is a boring Katha which doesn’t offer anything interesting. The film is dragged unnecessarily and it hurts the whole narrative.
Satyaprem Ki Katha is a sensitive film based on a taboo subject. The makers created a big mess while presenting the film. The director seemed to be confused while handling the subject. The makers failed to crack the basics of the script and presented a dull show. The film failed to balance commercial and social elements. Nowadays many filmmakers are trying to make a film on a taboo subject with commercial elements in it. Satyaprem Ki Katha makers followed the trend but were unsuccessful.
Performance wise Kartik Aaryan seems repetitive in these kinds of roles. We were not lucky enough to witness his best performances like Dhamaka and Freddy on the big screen. Kartik has been repeatedly doing rom-com films and he does nothing new as Satyaprem. The smile of Kartik Aaryan seems to be very annoying. Instead of showing teeth in most of the film, he should have added some creativity in his character. Kiara Advani’s role had been socially powerful, if only it would have been written well. We have seen Kiara many times in these roles where she smiles and cries repeatedly. Kiara looks gorgeous and beautiful throughout the film but her acting does not. Supriya Pathak, being a Gujarati gets to play the role of a Gujarati Mother and she nails her part. With better and effective writing, she would have been unbeatable. Gajraj Rao gives his best in each and every role he performs. Siddharth Randeria is a legend of Gujarati Cinema and has nailed his role of a Gujarati father like a boss. He is such a fine actor, who gives full justice to the character. Rajpal Yadav is totally wasted here by not getting enough screen space. Rest of the cast is decent.
The best thing about Satyaprem Ki Katha is its music, but it has been misplaced in the film. The songs like Naseeb Se, Sun Sajni, Aaj Ke Baad and Gujju Pataka are really enjoyable. Arijit Singh’s voice is the only good thing about the Pasoori song. Rest 2 to 3 tracks are decent. Satyaprem Ki Katha had already hit music and that was the main USP of the film, but makers didn’t even get that 1 thing right by misplacing the songs. Instead of watching the film for music, one can enjoy the audio on music platforms, which would save a lot of time.
Marathi Directors have not been that impressive in Bollywood and have presented a dull show. Sameer Vidwas joins the elite club of Marathi Directors failing in Bollywood. We recently saw Om Raut making fun of Ramayana with Adipurush. Om Raut had made a hard-hitting classic ‘Lokmanya’ in Marathi Cinema. Ravi Jadhav made classic films like Balgandharva, Natrang, Nude, Balak Palak and Timepass in Marathi Cinema and made a crap film ‘Banjo’ in Bollywood. Mahesh Manjrekar except for Vaastav has not been that impressive. Laxman Utekar’s Bollywood filmography (Luka Chuppi, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Mimi) is not that impressive as compared to his Marathi filmography where he made a solid classic film ‘Tapaal’. Vishal Furia who made a pathbreaking film ‘Lapachhapi’, delivered a crap with Chhorii in Bollywood. Nagraj Manjule is the only exception who has delivered a classic in Marathi Cinema as well as Bollywood.
The writing is the biggest drawback of the film. The film shows some other things in the 1st half, some different in the 2nd half and ends on a different note. The script is shattered and is completely in pieces. There is nothing going with the flow. The makers have tried to attempt multiple things and did not succeed in any one of them. The makers went too social and made a huge joke of themselves. There are many flaws in the script and it would need a separate article to mention all of them. The fictional Katha (stories) which we have heard in our childhood makes more sense than this. A complete misfire by the makers. The film has many dull moments which will make you scratch your head due to frustration. The story sometimes seems to be predictable and childish. There are many unnecessary twists added just to take the story somewhere and end it. The story seems like a wanderer who doesn’t know his address and is confused.
Satyaprem Ki Katha could have been a decent film with better and sensible writing, but the writers completely messed up. The direction has been a total disappointment. Hope makers would have spent more time on writing instead of spending huge money on sets. Satyaprem Ki Katha is a Katha which shouldn’t have been finalized. This is a half baked Katha (script) which doesn’t arrive at the destination. This Katha should be skipped at any cost to save time and money. This is a Katha which will remain unheard and people will forget about it in the coming days. Unconvincing Katha which no one would pay attention to. Looks like makers by mistakely finalized a TV serial script for a feature film.
The last 20-25 minutes deserve a complete bashing with a whole paragraph. When you feel like the movie is going to end, there comes another shitty scene just to test your patience level. There are many unnecessarily dragged moments in the last 20-25 mins. The film is forcefully stretched and doesn’t conclude on a proper note. The film is a complete mashup of many Bollywood films and ends up on a mediocre note failing to prove its own identity. The editing is so poor and many scenes could have been easily trimmed to avoid the unnecessary headache. The film could have been a super duper successful if it would have turned into a serial and is designed in such a manner. The treatment given is on par with daily soap advertisements.
