Kapil Sharma’s new café in Canada, Kap’s Café, was the scene of a surprise attack when it was shot upon in the early hours of July 9–10, 2025. Situated in Surrey, British Columbia, the café was fired upon about 1:50 a.m. when a passing vehicle unleashed gunfire, firing an estimated nine to twelve shots. The windows and sections of the property were vandalized, but fortunately, no injuries were reported as workers inside were spared harm. The attack occurred just weeks after the grand opening of the café and left the team and fans shocked.
Although police initially considered it a possible targeted attack, subsequent developments provided a darker twist. A Germany-resident Khalistani militant, Harjit Singh alias Laddi, who is said to have links with the outlawed terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), took responsibility for the attack. Laddi, who is also being sought by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) for suspected involvement in the 2024 assassination of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar, posted that Kapil Sharma’s allegedly derogatory remarks against Nihang Sikhs was the reason for the attack. Laddi’s name is on the NIA’s most-wanted list, and there is a reward of ₹10 lakh on his head.
As a reaction to the attack, Kapil Sharma’s wife Ginni Chatrath and the Kap’s Café team issued a heartfelt message on social media. They were shocked and saddened by the attack but unwavering in their resolve not to give up. “We had envisioned Kap’s Café to spread love, warmth, and happiness through great coffee and warm conversation. For violence to cross that vision is heartbreaking. We are still trying to absorb this shock, but we will not give up,” the statement said. The post expressed gratitude to local supporters, law enforcement, and patrons for their love and promised that the café would keep going forward with courage and solidarity.
Kapil Sharma also spoke about the incident publicly and stated that although the experience had shaken them, their determination remained firm. The Surrey Police Service and Canadian authorities have initiated a detailed investigation and are pursuing multiple directions, such as extremism, extortion, and other threats against Indian-origin enterprises. Surrey has witnessed a worrying increase in attacks on South Asian businesses of late, such as extortion demands and arson incidents.
The shooting at Kap’s Café not only highlights a serious issue of targeted violence but also underscores the challenges faced by Indian entrepreneurs abroad. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Kapil and Ginni’s firm stand, expressed through their words “We are not giving up”—sends a strong message of resilience. Their dream of building a warm, community-driven space may have been tested, but their spirit remains unshaken.
