Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959) was the 1st film in World Cinema, where we saw the gender bending theme for the 1st time. In Bollywood we had Kamal Haasan’s Chachi 420 and Govinda’s Aunty No. 1 and after years we saw this theme of gender bending roles in Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2.
We had a chance to do an exclusive interview with Ayushmann Khurrana for Dream Girl 2. In the interview, he revealed about the process and preparation about the gender bending theme character, which he is playing in the film.
Q] What was your preparation for playing this type of character in Dream Girl 2?
Ans – There is a kind of empathy. There is a perspective of how females think and act. I am surrounded by a lot of strong women which really helped me a lot. There is a sense of observation. You can learn it from heroines or the women with whom you are interacting on a daily basis. As an actor, observation is all that matters. I had worked for radio and even that helped me a lot with my voice modulation. I had done many prank calls by taking out a girl’s voice. This experience has helped me a lot.
Q] Did you feel any kind of hesitation to play this character (gender bending role) in Dream Girl 2?
Ans – Not at all. When an actor gets to play something different or unique, it is always exciting. I have been a theater actor, so I always put my actor ahead of me. The excitement of playing something different is always there.
Q] Can we say that it will be a hard time for actresses in future, after watching your performance in Dream Girl 2 (question asked in a fun manner)?
Ans – I hope that I get a nomination this time for Best Actress Category. And I hope that I win the award for Best Actress. (answered in a fun manner)
