In an industry known for its relentless schedules and round-the-clock shoots, actor Vikrant Massey has publicly backed Deepika Padukone’s recent stand for an eight-hour workday. The conversation was sparked when Deepika reportedly exited director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit after requesting a fixed shift policy, one that would allow her to balance her professional and personal life as a new mother.
Commenting on the issue, Vikrant Massey, who had also shared screen space with Deepika in Chhapaak, appreciated her choice and showed his respect. He mentioned that he not only condones her, but also dreams to walk in her shoes. “Perhaps in a couple of years we can work together again, but I would only work for eight hours,” Vikrant said, explaining that a change of that nature would have to be mutually respectful and involve give-and-take from both the actor and the producer. If necessary, he even said he’d consider lowering his fee to fit that type of adjustment.
Vikrant underscored the fact that Deepika’s demand was absolutely reasonable, particularly considering where she was in her life at that point. “She’s a young mother. She needs it,” he noted. He noted that taking a stance like this is not merely for convenience purposes, it’s about being able to create a new wave in Bollywood, one where mental well-being, balance, and dignity on set are prioritized.
The debate over reduced working hours has picked up steam in the business. A number of other celebrities, including Aditya Narayan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, and Surveen Chawla, have also spoken up for set timetables and balanced workplaces. To many, it is a long time coming in an industry that accepts 12–16 hour workdays as the norm and burnout as a badge of honor, not a warning sign.
Deepika Padukone’s choice to speak out for her own welfare and demand improved working conditions is not only courageous—it could very well be revolutionary. With others in the industry, like Vikrant Massey, making similar comments, it represents a shift in thinking that may ultimately redefine the way Bollywood works behind the scenes. In the meantime, Vikrant’s reaction is not only encouraging but inspiring, a look back at how change can begin with one voice, and take on greater strength when additional voices join in.
