Ajay Devgn is back with a bang or at least that’s what fans hoped when Son of Sardaar 2 hit theatres on August 1. With Mrunal Thakur joining him in the lead and promises of comedy, chaos, and culture, expectations were sky-high.
The film opened to mixed reviews, and while it had the makings of a fun family entertainer, it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. Social media buzz has been a mix of loyal fans defending the sequel and others questioning whether it should’ve been made at all.

Critics weren’t too kind either. Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express gave it a 2-star rating, calling the script outdated and the humour flat. She did, however, praise Deepak Dobriyal’s performance in a standout transgender role, calling it the most emotionally grounded part of the film. That’s something even those who didn’t enjoy the film agreed with.

But amid the criticism, something interesting happened. A fan on X (formerly Twitter) shared their dilemma: “The way the reviews are on Instagram and YouTube, I don’t even feel like watching it anymore.” And that’s when Mrunal Thakur stepped in. In a calm but clear response, she said:“Most of the reviews are misleading… I would appreciate if you decide how YOU LIKE IT SIR!”
Her reply quickly gained attention, with many applauding her for standing up for the film while still respecting the audience’s opinion. It wasn’t a defensive rant it felt honest, like a gentle nudge from someone who believes in her work.
Over on IMDb and Reddit, reviews are all over the place. Some found the film fun and appreciated the mix of Punjabi and Pakistani cultural moments. Others felt the sequel lacked the heart and humour of the original. One Reddit user wrote: “Ajay’s dance and Deepak’s role were great, but the rest felt unnecessary.” Another bluntly said “This is Housefull 5 level comedy, too loud, too much.”
