The trio of Sanya Malhotra, Ekta Kapoor and Guneet Monga collaborate once again after Pagglait for a Netflix film titled ‘Kathal’. This Kathal is completely rotten. Kathal makes a big joke of itself. Kathal promises one thing, shows one thing and delivers another thing. The script is a big mess. The film seems to be clueless and motiveless. In the name of a satire comedy drama, the director has presented a completely dull show. Kathal disappoints in each and every department.

The story of Kathal is set in a small town. The film revolves around a young aspiring police officer Mahima Basor (Sanya Malhotra) who along with her team members Saurabh (Anantvijay Joshi) and Kunti (Neha Saraf) investigates a bizarre case of two prized jackfruits which have been disappeared from politician Munnalal Pateria’s garden. She also seeks help from a news reporter named Anuj (Rajpal Yadav) during the investigation. Later on she comes up with a case of a missing girl and sets out to find her. She links both the cases together as this could only help her to find the girl. While carrying the investigation she comes up with some unexpected events. Will she succeed? Will she be able to prove her worth? What tactics will be used by her to solve the mystery? To find out all the answers watch Kathal.

The film tries to show the reality of our nation in a satirical way. We have seen that so called politicians are given importance and attention. The film tries to show the same issue. A jackfruit has been stolen from the minister’s garden and he makes fun of the police by making them find that jackfruit. Police have to waste their precious time by finding such a silly thing due to pressure from superior officers leaving them with no other choice. A smart officer connects the case of missing jackfruit with that of a missing girl. She cares for that missing girl and goes on a quest to find her. The character of that young missing girl is shown in such a bad way that even after she is missing you don’t feel anything for her. You won’t be interested in whether she is found or not because the writing is way too bad and doesn’t connect with you as a viewer. The girl’s character has been shown in a very negative way. This serious topic should have been shown in a sensible way but makers have made a huge joke out of it. The subject seemed to be interesting but the treatment given and filmmaking style is of lowest quality. Kathal could have ended up as a very good film if it had been handled with care. While showing a serious issue you can’t go wrong in presenting it. A viewer should feel for the character and should know the importance of that matter but Kathal makes a huge blunder in it. The basics have gone wrong and Kathal scores very low marks because of it.

Performance wise Sanya Malhotra does a decent job but this terrible writing doesn’t do any justice to her talent. Rajpal Yadav is a total riot in the film. This film will remind you of old Rajpal Yadav. His comic timing is just unmatchable and he is the only reason to keep this film in your watchlist. Anant Joshi and Neha Saraf put up a decent show but this kind of terrible film will only make their performances go unnoticed. Vijay Raaz tries his best but this script has only wasted his talent.

The writing is the biggest culprit of this film. The writers should be bashed for writing such a terrible and senseless script. The direction by Yashowardhan Mishra is equally bad as his writing. The music only spoils the narrative and adds nothing. The editing could have been better. Film has failed in each and every department. The characters are dumb, the story is dragged and the narrative is foolish. If the writing and presentation are bad, it affects the whole film. A director is known as the captain of the ship, but if the captain loses the right direction there are high chances of drowning and the same is the case with Kathal. Instead of making a satire film director has made a tiresome film.

Thankfully this film is dumped on OTT otherwise it would have wasted the money of those who would have witnessed this crap on the big screen. Netflix is famous for delivering craps and this one joins that list. Once in a blue moon, Netflix delivers a decent product and the makers were aware of the final output of this film and hence decided to dump this garbage on Netflix. The last good film from Netflix was Vasan Bala’s Monica O My Darling starring Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte. This film should be skipped at any cost to save your precious time. Kathal is lost and so is the film. Instead of watching this crap Kathal, spend time by eating actual Kathal which would be more satisfactory.

Rating – 2/5*
