Guru Dutt

Guru Dutt directed his 1st film Baazi in 1951. Baazi starred Dev Anand and Geeta Bali. The story of this film was written by Guru Dutt and Balraj Sahni and was produced by Dev Anand. The film was a huge hit at the Box Office and was 2nd highest grosser of the year. The success of this film encouraged others to make Noir films in Bollywood.

Guru Dutt’s 2nd film Jaal came in 1952. The film starred Dev Anand and Geeta Bali in the lead roles. It was the 3rd highest grosser of the year. This film was the 1st Indian Film to have an Anti-Hero as the lead character and gave birth to the concept of Anti-Hero.

In 1953, Guru Dutt directed the film Baaz in which he made his acting debut. The film also had Geeta Bali.

In 1954, Guru Dutt directed Aar Paar which has Shyama playing the role of a leading lady. The film was popular for its music.

In 1955, Guru Dutt came up with the social comedy film Mr. And Mrs. 55 which had Madhubala playing the role of a leading lady. The film was a critical and commercial success. It was the 5th highest grossing film of the year.

In 1956, Guru Dutt directed Geeta Bali and Abhi Bhattacharya in the film Sailaab.

In 1957, Guru Dutt directed his career best film Pyaasa. Pyaasa was a huge commercial success at the Box Office. Pyaasa received immense critical appreciation from all over the world. The film starred Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha along with Dutt. The film had super hit music.

In 1959, Guru Dutt directed his last film Kaagaz Ke Phool. Kaagaz Ke Phool was a Box Office disaster but is now considered as a Classic film. Guru Dutt decided not to direct any films in the future because of the failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool at the Box Office.

Guru Dutt directed 8 films in his career and acted in 5 of them which included Baaz (his acting debut), Aar Paar, Mr. And Mrs. 55, Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool.

Sunil Dutt

Sunil Dutt made his directorial debut in 1964 with the experimental film Yaadein. The film has only single actor Sunil Dutt appearing on-screen in the whole film. Nargis Dutt appears as a silhouette in the final scene. Yaadein was the first Indian Film that featured only a single actor and found a place in Guinness Book of World Records for having fewest actors in a film.

In 1971, Sunit Dutt directed the action drama film Reshma Aur Shera. The film was critically successful but a commercial failure. The film also had Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna in it.

In 1981, Sunil Dutt launched his son Sanjay Dutt in romantic action film Rocky. Rocky was a Box Office Success. Sunil Dutt played the role of Sanjay’s biological father in the film.

Shammi Kapoor

Shammi Kapoor directed 2 films in his career. His first film Manoranjan came in 1974. Manoranjan had Sanjeev Kumar and Zeenat Aman in the lead roles. The film did not perform well at the Box Office.

His next directorial flick Bundal Baaz came in 1976. This fantasy film was an Indian version of Aladdin. The film starred Rajesh Khanna and Sulakshana Pandit. Shammi Kapoor played the role of a genie. The film was a critical success but a commercial failure.

Naseeruddin Shah

Naseeruddin Shah showed his directorial skills with the film Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota (2006). The film had four different stories which eventually became intertwined with 9/11. The film comprised actors like Konkona Sen Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Ayesha Takia, Jimmy Sheirgill, Paresh Rawal, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, Shahana Goswami, Suhasini Mulay and Saroj Khan. The film was a disaster at the Box Office.

Amjad Khan

Amjad Khan directed his 1st film Chor Police in 1983. The film stars Shatrugan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor. In 1985, Amjad Khan came up with his 2nd directorial film Ameer Aadmi Garib Aadmi. The film stars Shatrugan Sinha and Parveen Babi in the lead roles. Both the films managed to do only average business at the Box Office.

Ajay Devgn’s 4th directorial film Bholaa is all set to release this week. Ajay Devgn’s last directorial film Runway 34 was released in 2022 and was a disaster at the Box Office. Ajay Devgn has never tasted success at the Box Office as a director. With Bholaa, it seems that Ajay Devgn has a winner and will finally get his first successful film at the Box Office.
