There was a time when offbeat films like Masaan, Trapped, Newton, Kadvi Hawa, Aligarh, Shahid, The Lunchbox, Udaan, Ankhon Dekhi, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, Ugly, Manjhi The Mountain Man, Dhanak, Waiting and many more turned out to be Classics and provided a very rich cinematic experience for the viewers. Joram is also an offbeat film which is totally clueless and completely scattered.
Dasru (Manoj Bajpayee) is wrongly accused of killing his wife Vaano (Tannistha Chatterjee). To escape his haunting past and deadly pursuers, he flees with his infant. A relentless cop named Ratnakar (Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub) is on his trail, while MLA Phulo Rani (Smita Tambe) seeks vengeance. Joram unfolds as a survival thriller amidst a harsh backdrop of ravaged forests, unchecked greed, rebellion, and the violent consequences of so-called development.
Manoj Bajpayee is a legendary actor who gives a standout performance in this clueless film. He plays the character without any flaws and makes the film somewhat watchable. Joram is a film which will be remembered only for the performance of Manoj Bajpayee. Smita Tambe is a talented actress and Joram helps her to showcase her talent. She easily gets into the character and looks deadly. It’s hardly been a week that we have witnessed a solid performance by Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub in Sam Bahadur and Joram is another treat for his fans. Tannistha Chatterjee has a small cameo and looks good. The supporting cast is amazing and acts very natural. Joram is a film which scores excellent marks only in the acting department. The casting of all the characters is so strong that they look unbeatable.
Joram had a nice subject and could have left a solid impact on the viewers. The storytelling is a complete mess and the message seems to be conveyed in an ineffective way.
Joram has a runtime of just 120 minutes, but feels terribly long. The editing could have been much better and many parts could have been trimmed. There are many unnecessary scenes added which have long pauses that will irritate viewers and test their patience level.
The screenplay is very boring which acts like a sleeping pill. The film is very much stretched and boring. The screenplay lacks thrill which fails to keep the audience hooked. A survival drama should have turnaround moments at regular intervals but Joram offers nothing.
Devashish Makhija’s direction is a big letdown. He had a solid subject but tried to mix up many things which created a big mess. His direction is scattered and there are many scenes which don’t connect with each other.
Joram is a film full of flaws and mistakes. There are many things which will raise questions and the makers have got the basics wrong. How can a small child survive amidst all the dangerous chaos going on in the film. There is no proper evidence or showcasing of the events which can convince the viewers.
The film raises questions about the corrupt system. The film deals about the rights of tribal people. There are many social issues raised in the film which only look good on paper but are presented in a very dull manner on-screen.
The film has an open ending and the director has left it to the viewers to interpret their own theories. The makers have made a very poor film where the audience won’t care much about the ending as they will try to forget the film and take it out of their mind.
Joram will provide a peaceful sleep to the viewers for those 2 hours and those who can bear it will survive only due to Manoj Bajpayee and Smita Tambe’s outstanding performances. This film is a complete waste of time and money, and hence should be skipped at any cost.
Rating – 2/5*
