Dream Girl 2 is a sequel to Dream Girl (2019). Dream Girl had refreshing content with a high dose of entertainment. The gender bending theme in World Cinema was first seen in Billy Wilder’s Classic screwball comedy film Some Like It Hot (1959). In Bollywood, we had Kamal Haasan’s Chachi 420 (1997) and Govinda’s Aunty No. 1 (1998), where this theme was explored. After 2 decades we had Dream Girl, where we saw a mainstream actor like Ayushmann Khurrana in a gender bending theme film. Dream Girl 2 doesn’t match your expectations and falls flat.

There are a majority of sequels in Bollywood, which are unnecessarily made just because the prequel was successful at the Box Office. Dream Girl 2 also joins the list of sequels which failed to deliver in terms of quality as compared to its prequel. Ayushmann makes people fool on-screen by dressing up like a woman and so do makers fool the audience by delivering a dull show. Dream Girl 2 is Ektaa Kapoor’s shortest TV serial with an addition of comedy along with melodrama.

Raaj Shaandilyaa tries too hard to make this film work on hilarious dialogues and solid punchlines. A film should have a proper screenplay and good writing. A film cannot work on the basis of having some funny dialogues and laughter moments. Dream Girl 2 rides high on one liners but fails in performing the whole show.

Karam (Ayushmann Khurrana), a small-town boy from Mathura, is struggling every day to pay his father Jagjit’s (Annu Kapoor) debt, who has borrowed money from nearly everyone on the planet. On the other hand, he is deeply in love with Pari (Ananya Panday), whose father has kept the conditions to marry her. To make ends meet, Karam poses as Pooja (Ayushmann Khurrana), which creates wild chaos and a comedy of errors.

Performance wise Ayushmann Khurrana nails his role. No one could have played the role better than Ayushmann. Ayushmann takes a dip into the character and delivers a fabulous performance. Ayushmann makes us believe that there are actually 2 different actors acting in the film. Ayushmann’s voice modulation, look and accent, everything looks top notch. Ananya Panday will be ignored by the audience in the film as Ayushmann is all set to steal the limelight from her. Ananya Panday fails to leave a mark and is just in the film for name sake and will be ignored by the audience. Dream Girl 2 has a solid supporting cast consisting of fabulous actors like Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Asrani, Abhishek Banerjee, Manjot Singh and Seema Pahwa. Raaj Shaandilyaa brings back the old Priyadarshan days when we used to see such a strong support in comedy films. Raaj fails to utilize this star cast and creates a big mess. Raaj Shaandilyaa could have created wonders with such a cast but fails. The supporting actors are wonderful in their roles and make you laugh at regular intervals.

Dream Girl did not have a chartbuster music album but had good music. Dream Girl 2 has a passable soundtrack. Except for Dil Ka Telephone 2.0 (thanks to its prequel) each and every song is bad. The only enjoyable parts in all these songs are Ayushmann’s killer dance moves. The songs unnecessarily hurt the narrative and increase the level of headache.

Raaj Shaandilyaa had a wonderful and promising debut with Dream Girl. With Dream Girl 2, he has directed a melodramatic TV serial. The faulty screenplay and outdated writing does not give any scope to him.

Raaj Shaandilyaa has written many good one liners which will make you laugh and go gaga over it. Some jokes fail to make you laugh as we see them regularly on WhatsApp. Raaj Shaandilyaa has only concentrated on dialogues and punchlines whereas failed to concentrate on the whole show. The screenplay is a big mess and is all outdated. The writing is faulty in parts and goes off the track every now and then. Dream Girl 2 feels bored after one point of time as we see repetitive things going on-screen.

Dream Girl 2 had a fresh concept and felt genuine. The role was more authentic and the story was realistic. Raaj Shaandilyaa had fabulously shaped Dream Girl by mixing many comic elements. Dream Girl hardly went wrong and entertained the audience throughout. Dream Girl 2 is nowhere near to Dream Girl in terms of quality.

Dream Girl 2 did not had anything new to offer. Just to make things work out and to make an unnecessary sequel, makers decided this time to make Ayushmann a complete woman by using the brand name of Dream Girl. The biggest USP of Dream Girl 2 was its supporting star cast but Raaj has created a mess with all of them by his faulty writing.

Dream Girl 2 is Ektaa Kapoor’s shortest TV serial which is dumped in theaters. Ektaa Kapoor’s TV serials are full of melodrama whereas Dream Girl 2 along with melodrama has a nice dose of comedy. Dream Girl 2 has poor frameworks which make you believe that you are actually watching a TV serial and not a feature film. The editing should have been better and some parts could have been easily trimmed.

Nowadays it has become a trend to add LGBTQ angle unnecessarily in every second or third Bollywood film. Dream Girl 2 also has a LGBTQ angle which comes out of nowhere and ruins the show.

There was a time when Ayushmann used to deliver back to back wonderful and unique films. Dream Girl 2 is Ayushmann’s 4th poor film in a row after Anek, Doctor G and An Action Hero. Ayushmann’s search for a good script continues. Looks like Ayushmann will have to wait for some more time to get a Box Office hit. Ayushmann’s last clean hit at the Box Office was Bala back in 2019. It is heartbreaking to see an actor like Ayushmann failing again and again.

Overall, Dream Girl 2 is a dull show full of melodrama which along with some laughter ends up being a solid disappointment. Ayushmann and Raaj Shaandilyaa have failed to deliver this time. Instead of watching Dream Girl 2, one should revisit Dream Girl again to save time and money. A below average show which fails to meet one’s expectations. Skip it.
