Smriti Irani is all ready to make a comeback on the small screen as the legendary Tulsi Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, and the first look of her return has sent the audiences into a wave of nostalgia. In the just unveiled preview, Smriti is wearing a classic maroon saree with zari embroidery, accompanied by heavy temple jewellery, a red bindi, and her iconic black-beaded mangalsutra, spot on the essence of Tulsi, the character that became a familiar name throughout India.

This comeback celebrates 25 years since Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi originally aired in 2000, a show that not only shattered TRP records but also reshaped Indian television. Describing the moment, Smriti said, “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn’t just a show, it’s a shared memory… it still lives in our hearts.”. My thanks to the people who made it all possible.” The show, which was made by Ekta Kapoor, lasted for more than seven years and went on to become one of the longest and most popular serials then.

The comeback isn’t just about the return of Smriti, Amar Upadhyay is also returning as Mihir Virani. The pair started shooting on July 4, and Amar was spotted on the set in his signature formal clothes. He said, “First day, first scene hua aur puraani yaadein taaza ho gayi,” which signifies the strong connection that the cast still has with the series even after twenty years. Their on-screen relationship as Tulsi and Mihir is among the most iconic in television history.

News reports indicate that the show will be a limited series with about 150 episodes with classic storytelling mixed with a twist of modernism. Surprisingly, Smriti Irani was allegedly offered approximately ₹14 lakh a day for her comeback, a whopping increase from the paltry ₹8,000 she was paid per episode when the first show started. The shoot was delayed a bit early this month because of some production tweaks and upgrades, as Ekta Kapoor wanted the show to be of the desired emotional and visual quality that audiences demand.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 is set to be an ideal blend of nostalgia and new-age storytelling. With the much-loved cast back and production standards improved for the current audience, the show is ready to return to its position as prime-time royalty.
